Disk Care

You might be surprised at how many damaged CD's and DVD's we get back, or at how they are damaged.
A fair number of them do NOT look like accidental damage, the scratches are just too bad to be an oopsy, unless you accidentally drop the disk data side down and run over it with your car.

What brings on this rant? A lot of the new, good movies we buy came back irrepairably damaged in less than 10 circulations.

Is it really that hard to take care of someone else's property? Is proper disk care so alien a concept? Or is it that people just don't care because it's not their own property? Would you treat your favorite DVD poorly or do you keep it in pristine condition?

I'm thinking we should heavily fine people who damage our disks like that, maybe that way people will start taking care of library property

Ash Tray Vandalism

Someone broke open our "smoker's station" wall mounted ash tray outside the front door and took that dirty, nasty, ashy insert. Why would someone do that?

On the bright side, I got to go for a nice ride to pick up the replacement today, yay!

Annoying Township

Well, the township cut the library's budget by $26,000 this year, well that's what it was suppose to be, ended up being closer to $40,000.
Luckily we raised $20,000 in donations.
And it looks like they are going to cut our budget even further in 2007.
Oiy, looks like there will be few new books coming into the library, but who goes to the library to read books, isn't that what Borders is for?!?!

Definitely MicroSucks not Microsoft

Well, the server did it again while I was eating dinner. It set itself exactly 24 hours ahead.
Why, I dunno, but I've disable the time server function for now as a precaution.
I hear Linux is nice.

Read signs anyone?

We just had a patron go straight out our emergency exit, apparently without noticing the BIG RED sign on the door saying "EMERGENCY EXIT, Alarm will sound if door is opened".
Oiy, you'd be surprised how often that happens.
How do you not see those things.

Oh, did I mention that she was on her cell phone at the time, that's probably why.

Microsoft or Microsucks?

As you can imagine, we use Microsoft Windows for our operating system. That's the root of most problems.
Current issue, I rebooted our primary server only to find out that it decided to go a day fast for it's clock, and the backup didn't. And since Microsoft in their wisdom made active directory (their domain log in and policy tools) time sensitive, it screwed up every machine, no one could log in.
This is the second time this happened to us, luckily I knew how to easily fix it this time.

Weirdish movie acquisition

The library just got Transformers The Movie 20th Anniversary Special Edition.
I am happy we got it, but a bit confused as to why. Oh well, I'm going to go home and watch it.

Directions?

Friday, I had a patron call in to ask the distance from Lafayette Hills, Pennsylvania to Indiana.
They didn't know how to spell Lafayette Hills and didn't have a city or town in Indiana, just the state.

Purpose.

This blog will serve as a record of all the weird things that happen at a public library.
The views posted in this blog in no way represent those of the library.
